As we approach the end of the World War II unit, we will be examining the decision of the United States to use the atomic bomb on Japan as well as the aftermath of the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Please view the short video to the right, courtesy of History.com. The video is an interview for the United States Strategic Bombing Survey in December 1945, Kaleria Palchikoff Drago, a Russian immigrant living in Japan, gives an eyewitness account of August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After viewing, complete the following tasks: 1.) List, at least, three facts that Mrs. Drago discusses concerning the bombing. 2.) Compose a list of 5 terms or phrases that come to mind after listening to the interview. 3.) In a paragraph, write a diary/journal entry as if you were living in Japan during the dropping of the atomic bombs. (You can do this from the perspective of an American living in Japan or as a Japanese civilian.) |

December 7, 2016 was the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, in this video survivors address their dwindling numbers and stress the importance of remembering its lessons for future generations. After viewing the video compose a paragraph discussing the feelings that the video evokes. |

In class, we have been examining the Interwar Period (1919-1939). Two of the major ideologies that thrived in Europe during this period were Fascism and Totalitarianism. After viewing the video, which provides a very good overview of both of these ideologies, students need to complete the following assignment.
First, create your own definitions for both Totalitarianism and Fascism. Second, in a well-thought-out paragraph describe what you think it would be like to live in one of these types of societies. |

N.T.I. Day 1 (Aug. 21,2017)
In class, we have been studying major themes of World Civilization (e.g. the Industrial Revolution, the Revolutions of the 1830s-1840s, and the philosophies/ideologies of Conservatism, Classical Liberalism, and Nationalism). While we will discuss the arts (an often overlooked part of Western Civilization) in class, sadly, we will not be able to devote as much time as the arts deserve. In a small effort to rectify, you will view the short video concerning Realism. Upon viewing, please complete the following task: use the internet, books etc. to find three examples of Realism art (using no more than one mentioned in the video). Then write the name of the work, the creator, and why you enjoy (or dislike) the piece. |
